Jodie Kilmister

Clouds,Trees, Reflections

Artist Statement about Exhibition:

My project for the last few years has been painting Lake Alexandra in Mittagong through the seasons. I go to the lake frequently and gather visual information, keeping sketch books, making drawings, sometimes plein air paintings and taking photographs. In the studio these ideas slowly become acrylic, oil or watercolour paintings, which lean toward expressionism.

I look for colour in the landscape and interesting shapes, such as the deep blue of the sky reflected in the lake or the symmetry of reflected trees. I visit the lake at different times of day and in various weather looking for colour. This year the deciduous trees in autumn were particularly spectacular.

Artist Bio:

Jodie Kilmister is a local painter who lives and works in Mittagong in the Southern Highlands, on Gundungurra country. Her current project is observing Lake Alexandra in Mittagong through the changing seasons with an expressionist lens, often intensifying observed colour using gestural brushwork.

Originally from Sydney, Jodie studied Fine Arts, attaining an Advanced Diploma in Painting and Photography. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Teaching. Jodie lived for four years in Napier in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand where she raised her two boys with her Kiwi husband. While in NZ, Jodie developed her passion for landscape painting and the colour blue. Her work is held in the Arts North Collection at the Northern Sydney Institute TAFE and in private collections in Australia and New Zealand.
