Symbiosis
Artist Statement about Exhibition:
SYMBIOSIS: “the mutually beneficial interaction between different organisms living in close physical proximity”.
The Symbiosis Series can be viewed from two perspectives.
The first is as sculpture. In this series, I explore the empty space formed by a structure and how changes to the structure alter the perception of that space accordingly. It is inspired by the Japanese concept of Ma, where an in-between empty space is the container of all its possibilities.
The second is as functional piece where I am exploring the relationship between form and function. Does the added function of containing something physical change the perception of the piece from a sculpture to a vase? And, if so, is it still art, or is it is now a design or a craft piece?
By adding a possible function, my intention is to highlight that which is contained and to shift the focus from the container alone to the symbiosis between content and container, a symbiosis of beauty and function, each highlighting the other in perfect harmony.
This Symbiosis Series has six pieces that suggests the Cycle of Life.
In Symbiosis l, the structure suggests an embryonic space, the beginning of an idea, opening to the world and full of potential.
Symbiosis II accentuates the growth period with its vertical lines, the 'pushing through'.
Symbiosis III is the embodiment of life in all its fullness.
Symbiosis IV has a solid foundation and is beginning to slow down. It is centred on the self and accumulated experiences.
Symbiosis V represents the movement inwards and deeper reflection.
Symbiosis VI is the end and beginning. Transcendence.
